Water: The Essence of Life

Essense of Life

Water is essential to human life. Although we can go on for many days and weeks without food, we will barely survive beyond 100 hours without water. The transport of nutrients, the production of energy, the removal and excretion of waste products – all these take place via the medium of water.

The water content of our bodies range from 90% as a foetus, 74% when we are born, to 59% as adults. This means that water is the main constituent of our bodies, which is constantly being changed and renewed every day by what we drink. Imagine then, the importance of the quality of the water we drink!

The water in our bodies is found in two forms, the Intra-Cellular Fluid (ICF), which is water inside the cells, and Extra-Cellular Fluid (ECF), the water that bathes the outside of the cells and tissues of the body. Within the ICF, chemical reactions produce energy, proteins are produced for growth, antibodies are formed – in essence, everything that makes the body function. The ECF includes the blood the lymphatic fluid which circulates around the body to bring nutrients to every cell, as well as remove waste products for disposal via the lungs and kidneys.

In summary again, all the processes that take place inside the body do so within a solution of water. That is why water is so critical for life – without it, life actually cannot exist!
